Are Lego Dreamzzz a good investment in 2024?
Table of Contents
This is a difficult question, as opposed to other themes, like Technic, Speed Champions, Harry potter or Star Wars, which have good history and data about how good or otherwise the investments may be. With Lego Dreamzzz we have nothing to go on.
After updating the database and sales rank in the last couple of weeks, it is clear that some of these Dreamzzz sets are very popular. Is this enough to make them investable?, if so which ones should you buy?, and importantly at what price should you buy?
What is Lego Dreamzzz
Dreamzzz is a tv series that came out mid way through 2023 based on five characters who enter the dream world and fight against the nightmare king and grime spawn.
The first sets were brought out to accompany the release.
A second series of the show is coming out in May 2024, so the series is popular enough to warrant another series, and we have seen more Dreamzzz sets coming out this year.
Certainly the cool thing about these sets and tv show is that there is so much possibility – in the dream world anything can happen, and that is why we have some incredible creations such as the turtle van in set 71456 or the crocodile car in 71458
But are they investable?, well to answer that first we must see its popularity…
How Popular is Lego Dreamzzz ?
When first updated the database with the sales rank of the Lego sets. Dreamzzz sets were no higher than 10,000 BSR on Amazon, which for Lego doesnt put it as hugely popular.
However after the refresh, we have seen that some of the sets are very popular in the toys market, being in the top 6000 sales rank for toys and games on Amazon, this would very much be in the ball park for an investable Lego set.
71453 Izzie and bunchu the bunny is the top 4000 and selling well on Amazon, as is 71454
Not quite as popular but popular than the others are 71455 and my personal favourite 71456 the very cool looking turtle van.
The vast majority of the other Dreamzzz sets that are retiring this year are much lower down the ranking in terms of popularity. Certainly not viable for an investment in my opinion.
As you are wanting the price to go up after retirement, and this will only happen if there are enough buyers.
But with those first four sets we mentioned maybe there is hope.
My reservations on Dreamzzz as an investment
Although there is some popularity in these sets, I certainly still have reservations, I don’t necessarily think that these sets will have the same collectability factors of other themes. This is often why you see the price go up so handsomely after retirement, because of that collectable nature. Therefore people are prepared to pay more than the regular price.
I still think these four sets will go up in price, but my target for my Lego investments is 100% and I dont think on a standard discount that these sets will likely hit that marker.
However if it is possible to get these at a right price, then there is certainly money to be made.
Another reservation is my experience with another theme. Lego Mario sets. I put these in a similar boat, a big theme, great playability and popularity. Mario even has that collectable nature. However as an investment they did not perform as well as I would have liked. I made some good money on them, but that was mainly because the discount was so huge.
Lego 71367 Yoshis house was an example of this retailing for £25 I picked up a fair few at just £10 so a massive discount. Post retirement however it has only really got to just above £30. Money doubled yes, but not a big increase on the RRP.
What discount would be good for a Lego Dreamzzz investment?
Often with other themes, I am happy with a discount of 25 – 33% off – sometimes just 20% off.
However with these sets I am less confident of seeing the price go particularly high. That being said there is still money to be made in these sets I believe – If you buy at the right price (if it becomes available)
My target for those four Lego Dreamzzz sets that we have mentioned is to get as close to half price for them as possible.
This makes it a safe investment, because you will not lose money on them. And then still hopefully within 12 months of retirement, you can double that investment.
There is also the potential with these sets that they do better than expected. If the tv show continues to grow in popularity and we have more and more sets over time. Fans will look at those sets of old that they missed out as they have retired and this is when would be able to cash in. But I don’t really see people being prepared to pay 2-3 times above the RRP and that the hurts your margin.
Wr have actually been able to grab some already this year thanks to the waitrose clearance offers earlier, I picked up a fair few of 71453 and 71454 at 50% off. It is always hard to say no to 50% off Lego and rarely is it a bad idea.
So like it or not I have invested in this theme, but am happy with the price that was able to get it for.
Conclusion is Lego Dreamzzz a good investment?
Overall I would say still not sure about this one, if you have a big capital it may be worth taking a punt for some of these sets, if limited as to how many you can buy then you will likely want to steer close to the safety of other sets and themes, the likes of Star Wars and Harry Potter, technic and Speed champions. Check out the investment guides for these themes for which sets to focus on.
If you are going to invest in this theme, then there is only four I would consider.
71453
71454
71455
71456
These are retiring this year and the most popular sets.
Personally I would want atleast a discount of 40% -50% off before I bought any of these. At these prices, your money will be safe whether you can hit a 100% ROI is a different matter. But you won’t be losing money after all of the fees.
