Lego investing which Speed champions sets to buy in 2024 and why

Speed champions are always one of my favourite for Lego  investing, popular, unique, collectable, affordable, they always offer a great return. So their sets are always on my watch list.

As always following the core principles, we want a popular set, a retiring set and a well discounted set. But knowing which ones to put on your watchlist is a good start then more often than not the discounts will come at some point.

So all the sets we will focus on will be expected to retire this year. There is small elements of risk that some sets can have their retirement date bumped so always bear this in mind.
Check out the full retirement list for all sets here

There are currently 10 sets that are expected to retire this year, the first four I would say are most likely to leave the market as have been around the longest, so will focus on these first then the other 6 due to them having less time on the market there is that risk that they won’t retire. But I would expect most if not all to do so.

The Speed Champions sets that have been out the longest.

These four sets all came out in March 2022, and despite their popularity I cannot see them staying on the market for any longer than 2 and a half years. So these will retire at the end of the year.

Target price wise anything at 30% off or more is a great price and enough to see a 100% return on investment.

76906, Speed Champions, 1970 Ferrari 512 M, £19.99,

A very cool set this one, in the top 1,000 for sales rank on toys and games on Amazon. Highly iconic set that will have great collectability, and be popular with all ages.
Havent got many of these yet, it is often available at around £15 which is a decent price, but to really increase your ROI want a bit more, we have got as low as £12.99 on Amazon and sure we will see deals throughout the year. £12-13 is a great target buy, then if doesn’t go that low will be picking up for £14 -15 end of year.

76907, Speed Champions, Lotus Evija, £19.99,

Another set that is rarely discounted, easy to pick up at £15 but again we want a bit more when we see those prices.

Lotus being a very collectable car brand as well, this will do very well post retirement. Similar sales rank to the ferrari, top 1,000.

76908, Speed Champions, Lamborghini Countach, £19.99

This is one set that I do have a fair few off, partly because I thought it was retiring last year until it got bumped. This set is hugely popular and out of the 3 is my favourite.

It is still selling well even when not in stock on Amazon and will continue to do so. I have been able to pick up a few at under £12, and around the £12 mark would be my target buy.

We will see what the year brings.

76909 Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance & Project One

This one is a bit of an outlier, no doubt this will do very well post retirement, it is a popular set, unique, and with the upcoming array of Formula one sets (2 further speed champions ones) Collectors will have their eyes on any other F1 speed champions. So this set ticks alot of boxes.

However it is less easily available, as you can only buy from Jadlam toys and models. Hopefully we will see some discounts around on this set, throughout the year, and any that come I will be snapping up very quickly.

Although unlikely to get discounts, this may be one worth considering buying from Lego itself. May not get the discount, but with cashback, points and free GWP it may make the purchase worth while.

The five other sets expected to retire this year.

The following sets all came out in March 2023 and are equally popular and sets often don’t go past the 18 month line, but I would not be surprised if one or two of these got extended. That is cautious me talking so for these sets unless the deal is very good (40 or 50%) discount I will wait until later in the year to invest.

76914, Speed Champions, Ferrari 812 Competizione, £19.99

Hugely Popular top 1,000 sales rank again, has dipped around the £12 mark in the past

76915, Speed Champions, Pagani Utopia, £19.99

Equally popular as all of the others, has got to about £14, should hopefully go little cheaper.

76916, Speed Champions, Porsche 963, £19.99

Porsche so sure to be very collectable, hasn’t gone lower than £15 before but sure it will over the year.

76917, Speed Champions, 2 Fast 2 Furious Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34), £19.99

Very popular this set, Nissan skyline has always been my dream car, and this set has the double whammy of a popular car in the skyline and from iconic movie as well. So will sure to do very well post retirement, and already is selling extremely well when out of stock on Amazon.

Has gone as low as £14

76918, Speed Champions, McLaren Solus GT & McLaren F1 LM, £39.99 –

Another double set, a great set of cars this one and again extremely popular set. Again does well when out of stock.

Has been readily available at £30 – but there have been a few bigger discounts through 2023 of around the £25 price point and that therefore would be my target buy price.

Overall you buy any of these at a decent discount you are going to make money, that is the beauty of this theme. Alot will depend on the prices that we see throughout the year. If some never get discounted further than 25%, then 25% is a great discount. If like we saw with 76911 last year, there was lots of half price deals, then buying at just 25% is not as lucrative.

But we have a good idea of what we can expect.

As always appreciate your thoughts on these investments, and any questions can always hit me up on twitter.
